What it is
An implant is a small titanium post placed in the jaw where a tooth is missing. Once the bone has healed around it, a crown is attached on top. It does not rely on the teeth next to it, the way a bridge does.
Consult and 3D scan, placement, a healing period, then your final crown.
It may suit you if
- A missing tooth or one that cannot be saved
- A bridge or partial you are tired of
- You avoid certain foods on one side
- A gap that shows when you smile
How it goes
3D scan
A cone-beam scan shows bone height and nerves, so placement is planned, not guessed.
Placement
Usually under local anaesthetic, with sedation if you want it. Many people go back to work the next day.
Healing
The bone bonds to the implant over a few months. You leave with a temporary tooth where it shows.
Your crown
The final crown is shade-matched to your neighbours.
Your questions
Are implants painful?
Most people tell us it was easier than they expected. We numb the area well, and you can choose sedation. Expect some soreness for a few days.
How long is recovery?
Most people return to normal routines in a day or two. Full healing under the gum takes a few months.
How long do implants last?
Implants can last a long time with good care, but nobody can promise forever. Smoking, gum health and grinding all matter, and we tell you where you stand.
Talk implants through with the dentist.
A 45 minute smile consult with the dentist. You leave with a written plan.
