What it is

Whitening lifts stains from the enamel you already have. Bonding adds tooth-coloured resin to fix a chipped edge, close a small gap or even out a short tooth. Together they cover most of what people mean by a smile makeover, and nothing is removed from the tooth.

In-office whitening is one appointment. Bonding is one appointment per area.

It may suit you if

  • Teeth that have yellowed with coffee, tea or time
  • A chipped front edge or a small gap
  • You want a change for an event in the next month
  • You are not ready for veneers

How it goes

  1. Shade check

We record your current shade on the guide so you can see the change in numbers, not just in a mirror.

  2. Whiten first

In the chair, or with trays you wear at home. Bonding is matched after whitening, because resin does not whiten.

  3. Bond and shape

Resin is layered, shaped and polished in one sitting. Most people go back to work the same day.

  4. Keep it

A touch-up tray set and a plan for coffee drinkers.

Your questions

Does whitening hurt?

Some people feel sensitivity for a day or two. We use a desensitiser and can split treatment across shorter sessions if you are prone to it.

How long does bonding last?

It depends on how you bite and what you eat. We tell you what to expect for your teeth at the consult and check it at every cleaning.

Can you whiten crowns or veneers?

No. Only natural enamel lightens, so we plan whitening before any new crowns, veneers or bonding.

Talk whitening through with the dentist.

A 45 minute smile consult with the dentist. You leave with a written plan.
